The cross stood empty.
The tomb was sealed.
And for a day… all was quiet.
Holy Saturday is the forgotten day of Holy Week.
It sits between the horror of crucifixion and the triumph of resurrection.
It’s the in-between, the day of silence, sorrow, and suspense.
But don’t overlook it.
Because for every believer who has ever waited on God…
For every prayer that’s felt unanswered…
For every season that seemed silent…
Holy Saturday speaks.
What Happened on Holy Saturday?
Scripture doesn’t give us many details about this day, but here’s what we know:
Jesus’ body lay in the tomb, wrapped in linen and placed in a borrowed grave (Luke 23:53).
Roman guards were stationed to secure the tomb (Matthew 27:65–66).
The disciples were scattered—hiding, grieving, confused, and afraid.
And the religious leaders believed they had finally silenced Him.
To the human eye, this day was a defeat.
But behind the stone, God was still at work.
The Silence Wasn’t Emptiness—It Was Preparation
There’s a holy tension in Holy Saturday. A deep ache. A waiting that feels unbearable.
But we must remember: silence is not the same as absence.
God had not abandoned the plan.
He was fulfilling it.
Jesus’ body rested, but His spirit was not idle.
“For Christ also suffered once for sins… He went and preached to the spirits in prison…” -1 Peter 3:18–19
Even in death, Jesus was moving. Declaring victory over darkness. Proclaiming freedom. Shaking hell to its core.
And in the lives of His followers, He was sowing something sacred: trust in the silence.
When Your Story Feels Stuck
Holy Saturday speaks to every soul stuck in the middle.
You’ve left something behind… but haven’t stepped into what’s next.
You’ve buried the dream… but haven’t seen the promise.
You’ve prayed the prayer… but haven’t heard the answer.
This is where many of us live—not in the agony of Friday or the joy of Sunday, but in the confusion of Saturday.
Where is God?
Why hasn’t He moved?
Why does it feel like nothing is happening?
But Holy Saturday reminds us: just because you can’t see movement, doesn’t mean God isn’t working.
The Weight of Waiting
Waiting is sacred ground. It strips us of control. It demands faith. It reveals what we believe when nothing seems to change.
“Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him. - Psalm 62:5
The disciples didn’t know resurrection was coming in 24 hours. They didn’t know joy would return.
To them, Saturday was a closed chapter.
But God was already writing the next one.
Holy Saturday reminds us: what feels like the end is often just the pause before the miracle.
The Invitation of Holy Saturday
So what do we do in the silence?
We wait.
We hope.
We rest in what He already promised.
Jesus said He would rise.
He said He would conquer death.
He said this wasn’t the end.
The silence didn’t cancel the promise. It confirmed the need to trust it.
“But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles.” - Isaiah 40:31
Holy Saturday invites us to surrender to God’s timing—even when we don’t understand it.
How to Embrace Holy Saturday
Here are a few ways to engage with this sacred in-between day:
Sit in silence. Turn off the noise. Let your soul breathe.
Reflect on the promises of Jesus. Remember what He said—He is faithful to fulfill it.
Journal your waiting. What are you hoping for? What has God spoken over your life that hasn’t come to pass yet?
Resist the urge to rush. Some resurrections require stillness first.
God does His deepest work in the dark.
Final Thoughts
Holy Saturday is not about despair—it’s about discipline.
Not about anxiety, but about abiding.
If you’re in a season of silence, remember:
The tomb may be sealed, but the story isn’t over.
He may seem still, but heaven is moving.
Trust the silence.
Because Sunday is coming.
